How To Get Here and Where To Stay

Montrose Regional Airport

~1.5 hours

Durango Airport

~1.5 hours

You’ll need a car

Without a rugged 4wheel drive vehicle, there are only 2 roads and 1 railroad track into Silverton. Travel US 550, Million Dollar Highway, from either Durango or Montrose. Both drives have spectacular scenery, few guardrails, and will take about 1.5 hours driving from their respective airports.

If flying…

We would recommend using one of these 2 airports, Durango or Montrose. Denver is a major hub and offers more affordable flights, but you will also drive across most of the state. Grand Junction can also be an option, about 2.5 hours north of Silverton.

Regardless of your path

Wash your windshield, charge your camera, and plan a little extra time so you can pull over and take it in.

Accommodations

We can’t stress it enough, Silverton is a small town, so if you are planning on coming, book something! No one wants to drive over Red Mountain Pass in the dark (you don’t even see the views), so book something early, otherwise you might be in Durango, Ouray, or finding the most comfy porch stoop in town. We’ve confirmed there is another wedding this weekend and they are booking entire hotels.

Happy to give an honest review of anything I am familiar with, but since I have always stayed with family or camped, I don’t have real experience with the town’s hotels. So look at availability, pictures, and reviews online.

There are cute 19th century establishments that feel like the old west, there are motels that you drive your car up to your door, and other places in between. Again, reach out with any questions and we will be happy to help you decide.

Worth noting: 2 hotels we know are already completely taken. The Villa Dallavalle will be used by family. The Wymann hotel (recently updated) has been rented out entirely for another wedding that weekend.

If you want a kitchen and/or room for the whole family, these will likely be your best options. Check both Airbnb and VRBO as they do have different listings for Silverton.

If free cancellation, why wait?

Worth noting:
1. Read the description. Location isn’t imperative, because everything is close, but we have seen an airbnb listing that shows it as downtown on their map, but the description clarifies it is up a steep dirt road not in town.
2. Some places have minimum nights, so if you have the option to stay 3 nights (and want to), look at both 2 nights and 3 nights to see all options. Though we’d highly recommend coming early or staying after the wedding and staying in one of the neighboring towns too, namely Ouray, Telluride, Durango.

There are multiple campgrounds in town, but mostly used by large RVs.

For the best experience, we’d recommend heading a bit out of town and staying at South Mineral Creek or Eureka campgrounds.

Molas Lake Campground offers the most spectacular views around, but the cost is not cheap and they book their best spots 6 months in advance (when their books open).

There is ample dispersed camping (free, but no bathroom, no table, no nothing) but recognize it is a busy time of the year so plan accordingly.

Food

There is a small grocery store in town and of course restaurants, but if you know you’ll want some snacks, go ahead and grab those before you get into town.
