A few ideas to make the most of your trip

Wander in the wildflowers

Late June is a perfect time to see wildflowers in the alpine

Stare at the stars

Silverton is remote and an excellent place to observe the night sky. Without clouds, you are certain to see a shooting star. Make a wish!

Silverton is a Dark Sky Community, but if stars are your thing or you want to get some imagery, just out of town is best. Either toward the townsite of Eureka or catch sunset at Molas Lake and watch the moon rise over the Grenadiers.

Climb a via ferrata

For those seeking a little adventure, the Ouray Via Ferrata offers a unique way to explore the canyon walls just outside Ouray (about 45 minutes from Silverton). This protected climbing route follows iron rungs, cables, and bridges above the river, with stunning views and varying levels of exposure.

No prior climbing experience is required, but a head for heights helps. Guided trips and gear rentals can be found on San Juan Mountain Guides.

Great for families

Spend a day in Ouray (about 45 minutes away). Take family pictures on the scenic Million Dollar Highway, go to Box Canyon Waterfall & Park (pictured right), and soak in the Ouray Hot Springs Pool while the kids hit the slide.

For a unique and authentic-to-Silverton family portrait, stop by the Old Tyme Portrait Parlor in Silverton.

You can also:

  • Rent a bike to explore town or ride the new Baker’s Park
  • Rent a side by side and bump about on part of the Alpine Loop
  • Get a funnel cake (many toppings and a summertime favorite)

Ride the historic Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

If you leave yourself enough time and budget to ride the train, you won’t regret it. Chugging along the Animas River are views you can’t otherwise see, deep in the canyon.
